Valentine’s Day lands next week, and whether you’re planning a romantic dinner with your partner or a fun evening in with your friends, popping open a bottle of wine is the perfect way to celebrate. There’s no need to pay over the odds, though. There are plenty of affordable yet delicious wines available at supermarkets such as Waitrose, Tesco and Asda (all of which are also currently offering a range of Valentine’s Day meal deals).

Naturally, many supermarkets want to entice you onto their loyalty schemes, such as Tesco Clubcard, so some of the deals on this list will require you to sign up. Stocking up on wine is also an effective way to save: Sainsbury’s is currently offering Nectar customers 25 per cent off when three or more selected bottles are bought together. Meanwhile, Waitrose and Morrisons are also offering 25 per cent off when you buy six bottles of selected wines.

If you’re not looking to bulk-buy, below, I’ve rounded up the best supermarket wine deals on individual bottles. Not sure what you’re looking for? Our guides to the best white wines, best red wines, best rosés wines and best orange wines offer good starting points.

Kaapzicht granite ridge bush vine chenin blanc: Was £15, now £12, Waitrosecellar.com

(Waitrose)

Save £3 on this chenin blanc, which is suitable for vegans, when you buy it from Waitrose. Wine specialist Rosamund Hall praised this wine, calling it “a lovely ripe, textured and satisfying South African chenin blanc from old bush vines grown in and around Stellenbosch”. She added that “it’s brimming with pineapple and fruit bowls full of ripe stone fruit and a subtle saline lick on the finish”.

Codorníu 1872 organic cava brut: Was £11, now £8, Waitrosecellar.com

(Waitrose)

This organic cava brut is on offer at Waitrose. An alternative to champagne, cava is made using the same method. We haven’t tested this exact bottle, but Codorníu made it into our best supermarket wines roundup. This offer’s running until early March, which gives you time to stock up for future celebrations.

Gerard Bertrand genora orange wine: Was £12, now £10, Tesco.com

(Tesco)

Looking to try orange wine for the first time? Sinead Murdoch, sommelier and co-founder of restaurant Tasca, suggests that this bottle is a good place to start. “A blend of chardonnay, roussanne, viognier, and grenache blanc, it’s a true southern French mix,” she said in our guide to the best supermarket wines. “The white grapes are macerated on their skins, giving the wine a lightly spiced, citrusy character with a bright tangerine hum.” You can get this relatively affordable bottle for even less when you shop with a Tesco Clubcard, which is free to sign up for.

Taittinger prestige rosé: Was £48, now £39, Asda.com

(Asda)

One of our favourite bottles from our guide to the best rosé wines now has £9 off. If you’re looking for a wine that tastes of “ripe strawberries, hedgerow fruit, zippy redcurrants and cream-topped baked brioche”, then this is the bottle for you.

19 Crimes red wine: Was £9.50, now £7.50, Tesco.com

(Tesco)

If you’re after an affordable red, wine writer Aidy Smith described this 19 Crimes option as “plush and well-rounded with an indulgently moreish character”. Aidy added the wine features notes of “jammy blackcurrants and juicy plums”. Plus, you can now get this bottle for £7.50 when you shop with a Tesco Clubcard.
