Uefa make mistake in Champions League draw

Follow live coverage after the Champions League draw had to be redone following an extraordinary mistake in the initial ceremony.

Controversy struck when Manchester United were initially drawn to play against Villarreal, yet having already faced the Liga club in the group stages, this was in error. Uefa’s Giorgio Marchetti spotted the mistake and ordered the tie to be re-drawn, with Villarreal ultimately facing Manchester City. But a technical error appeared to subsequently block United from being selected as one of the teams eligible to play the next side drawn out of the hat, Atletico with Uefa confirming the intial draw void. A second, official ceremony then took place.

2019 champions Liverpool now face Inter Milan, three-time winners United take on Atletico Madrid, Premier League champions City play Sporting and defending champions Chelsea go up against Lille, just as they did in the initial draw. First legs will take place on 15-16 and 22-23 February, before second legs on 8-9 and 15-16 March.

Follow all the reaction from the Champions League draw below.

Speaking of RB Salzburg, that was who Liverpool thought they were facing before the re-draw. Now they will travel to the San Siro to take on Inter Milan in February before the return leg in Anfield in March.

A tough task, but one you feel they are more than up to passing.

Worth a mention for RB Salzburg. They haven’t really had the rub of the green in either of the draws today. Liverpool in the first one, now they will face 2020 champions Bayern Munich.

The Austrian outfit are into the Champions League knockout stages and straight in at the deep end.

Positive signs for Chelsea - who have drawn Lille twice today!

Man City are preparing to face Sporting Lisbon for the first time since the 2011-12 Europa League last 16 when the Portuguese side stunned them to win on away goals.

Tie of the round? Has to be PSG vs Real Madrid.

A simply superb stat, this. Safe to say Atletico will not be relishing the chance of coming up against Cristiano Ronaldo yet again.

Rudiger reacts. Looks like he enjoyed all of that nonsense.

So Manchester United will now face Atletico Madrid rather than PSG. Possibly an easier tie, but still incredibly difficult for Ralf Rangnick’s side.

The only tie which has remained from the botched draw is Chelsea vs Lille.

Liverpool face a tough task as they take on Serie A champions Inter Milan - on paper a more challenging tie than their original opponents RB Leipzig.

And Manchester City take on Sporting Lisbon in a tie they will be confident of winning (they were originally drawn against Villarreal).

Hold the phone! It was said that Liverpool couldn’t face Villarreal. But why? Have they got this wrong again?!
