Sweden vs Canada LIVE: Tokyo 2020 women’s football final result after penalty shootout
Both nations guaranteed a medal but gold is on the line in Yokohama
Sweden face Canada in the final of the women’s football at the Tokyo Olympics on Thursday, with the gold medal game taking place in Yokohama.
Both these nations picked up medals in Rio 2016, but neither got the gold they are both searching for this time around - Sweden took silver, Canada the bronze, both edged out by Germany along the way. One of them will be celebrating wildly come full-time on this occasion, however, with Sweden having overcome Japan and Australia to get back into the final, and Canada seeing off Brazil and United States en route to the Nissan Stadium showpiece event.
Team USA eventually took the bronze medal on Thursday after a thrilling seven-goal encounter with Australia, but now it’s all eyes on Sweden and Canada to see who triumphs as Olympic champions in Japan.

Half time in extra time
We’re at the break. 15 minutes more to play, then it’ll either be gold-plated celebrations...or penalties to decide the women’s final at the Olympics.
Jonne Andersson smacks an effort from range just over the bar right before the whistle. The Chelsea defender has only ever scored once at international level - fairly close to an epic second there. Also a yellow card for Asllani for a late and fairly reckless tackle on Buchanan.

Blackstenius twists and turns on the edge of the box and curls in a shot, but it’s a few yards wide and never really troubling Labbe.
Tiredness starting to become a factor now for those still on the pitch who started - it might be nighttime in Yokohama but remember the temperature and humidity are really playing a part.
Five minutes until the break in extra time.

Lawrence speeds from right-back to centre-forward to open up Sweden and set Rose free in the left channel, but can’t quite wrap her left boot around the ball and it flies wide of the near post. Then Lawrence delivers another great clipped cross to the back post which causes havoc, is half-cleared and eventually Grosso rattles in a shot which is saved.
Riviere on for Chapman.

What a chance! Mix-up in the Canadian defence and the ball falls to Asllani, but she can’t control her finish on the volley and it’s cleared off the line by Buchanan. Very important positional work to get back and cover behind her ‘keeper.
Four minutes added on - then it’s the extra 30 if needed.

Big call for Canada boss Bev Priestman, as she takes off captain and 300-plus-cap Christine Sinclair. On comes Jordyn Huitema as they go looking for the late win.
Chapman does well down the left to get past Glas, but the clipped cross is claimed by Lindahl.
Just a few minutes to go - extra time looming large at this point.

Deanne Rose has been a brilliant impact player for Canada in this second half and she almost gets in down the right channel after a clever turn, but the cut-back cross is cleared.
Up the other end, Rolfe rattles in a strike at the near post after a cut-back is aimed her way, but it’s slightly sliced and well wide of Labbe’s goal.
Sweden are then gifted an opening as the left wing is somehow left completely open, but Scott does brilliantly to get back and make a sliding tackle to concede a corner.

Andersson, Bennison and Hurtig all on for Sweden as they seek to reestablish control of the game.
Canada looking more assured in possession since that equaliser, so probably a good move for Sweden to up the ante and look to be proactive about the situation.
15 minutes or so plus injury time to go and a gold medal on the line!

Off the line! Rose beats Lindahl to a loose ball and scoops it away from the keeper, diverting it to Lawrence who curls it immediately at goal - but it’s blocked and cleared behind for a corner. Canada suddenly right on the front foot and looking to take the lead.
From the corner it’s bouncing around in the area and Sinclair tees up Fleming for a shot from the edge of the box - rifled just over the bar!
