Jack Draper stormed into the second week of the French Open for the first time as he impressively downed the teenager Joao Fonseca in straight-sets to reach the fourth round in Roland Garros.
In a meeting of two of the sport’s rising stars, Draper was dominant from the start and clinical throughout, defeating the 18-year-old from Brazil 6-2 6-4 6-2. British No 1 Draper had not won a match at the French Open before this week, but the fifth seed’s performances are getting better and better on the Paris clay and this was his most complete display yet.
Draper’s victory means there will be two British men in the last-16 of a grand slam for the first time since 2017, with Cameron Norrie joining him by beating Jacob Fearnley 6-3 7-6 6-2. While Fearnley was making his first appearance at Roland Garros, Norrie is enjoying an improved run of form after slipping down the rankings.
The winner could play Novak Djokovic, who faces qualifier Filip Misolic in the night session. On the women’s side, second seed Coco Gauff looks to continue her run against Marie Bouzkova, while third seed Jessica Pegula came from a set down to defeat Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova. Madison Keys takes on Sofia Kenin in an all-American battle.

Credit to Fonseca. He looked beaten when he made another error to look at two break points, but he saves them both and then holds as Draper finds the net with the drop shot.
Oh, Fonseca has called the trainer, and is receiving some treatment on his right shoulder and forearm.

Draper’s use of the drop shot has been wonderful today. He started this game with a scorching forehand winner, then left Fonseca stranded behind the baseline with the drop shot to bring up another break point.
Fonseca floats long on the backhand slice. Draper secures the double-break.

Draper consolidates the break, again turning to the drop shot and holding firm in the rally, biding his time before the Fonseca miss. It’s been so assured from the 23-year-old.

But Draper breaks at the third opportunity! Fonseca netted on a simple rally ball on deuce, then the Brazilian misses again on the forehand after Draper landed a deep return.

Draper looks to strike early in the third! He finds another excellent drop shot, well disguised from inside the baseline, then gets to 15-40 as Fonseca floats a defensive slice long.
Two break points: but Fonseca is aggressive on his forehand to Draper’s forehand, forcing the miss, and then Draper makes a rare unforced error on the forehand.

Draper saves the first break point as he shows good defence on the baseline and Fonseca pushes long.
But then, Draper throws in a double fault! The pressure comes again, but Draper responds with an ace!

Now then! Draper was in control and two points away from the set, but has to face break point!
Fonseca catches Draper off guard with a forehand that kicks off the clay. Then he works his way into the point and puts away the forehand winner. On 30-30, Fonseca stays aggressive and Draper misses cross-court as the Brazilian came to the net.
For the first time, Fonseca will look at a break point.

Over to Draper to serve it out. Fonseca pulls off the net approach to put away a soft volley, then finds the forehand winner. It’s been a better set from the Brazilian but he’s not been able to touch him on the returns.

Another excellent service game from Draper. A well constructed point, serving out wide, landing the forehand to the same corner and then directing the backhand crosscourt, sets up game point. Fonseca catches the tape with the forehand and it bounces out.
