Jack Draper stormed into the second week of the French Open for the first time as he impressively downed the teenager Joao Fonseca in straight-sets to reach the fourth round in Roland Garros.

In a meeting of two of the sport’s rising stars, Draper was dominant from the start and clinical throughout, defeating the 18-year-old from Brazil 6-2 6-4 6-2. British No 1 Draper had not won a match at the French Open before this week, but the fifth seed’s performances are getting better and better on the Paris clay and this was his most complete display yet.

Draper’s victory means there will be two British men in the last-16 of a grand slam for the first time since 2017, with Cameron Norrie joining him by beating Jacob Fearnley 6-3 7-6 6-2. While Fearnley was making his first appearance at Roland Garros, Norrie is enjoying an improved run of form after slipping down the rankings.

The winner could play Novak Djokovic, who faces qualifier Filip Misolic in the night session. On the women’s side, second seed Coco Gauff looks to continue her run against Marie Bouzkova, while third seed Jessica Pegula came from a set down to defeat Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova. Madison Keys takes on Sofia Kenin in an all-American battle.

Not much to say about Draper’s service games at the moment. The 23-year-old rolls through another one, without dropping a point.

Fonseca is looking much happier now. The Brazilian already has more winners through the first two games of the second set than he did in the whole of the first. The 18-year-old’s forehand is a lovely shot when he can step into it.

Jack Draper 6-2 1-1 Joao Fonseca*

Draper did not have the finest serving performance in the first set, making just 46% of first serves.

But it’s so effective when the first serve lands in, winning over 90% of the points.

He starts the second set with a hold to love, sealed with a big ace out wide.

FIRST SET! Jack Draper 6-2 Joao Fonseca

Class from Draper, who is in complete control as he takes the opening set 6-2 against young Fonseca, who has found it hard to adjust to Draper’s forehand after initially making a bright start.

Fonseca’s forehand has yet to chip at Draper’s defences at all - the Brazilian is limited to just one forehand winner. Credit to Draper and his movement across the baseline.

*Jack Draper 5-2 Joao Fonseca - Draper breaks!

Draper puts Fonseca under more pressure and Fonseca goes too big on the forehand down 0-30.

It brings up three break points: forehand winner from Draper down the line! That’s excellent.

He takes the double break and will serve for the opening set next.

Fonseca’s winner/unforced error count is currently 3/14.

Draper’s winner/unforced error count is 7/5. It’s been an assured start form the fifth seed.
