THE LOOK AND FEEL

This is a pub that serves as a popular down-to-earth local as well as having an excellent restaurant for those wanting more than a casual drink. There are characterful touches, such as beams, exposed brickwork, old wooden tables and magnum wine bottles, and a cosy corner with booths below hops hanging from the ceiling. Guest rooms are suitably smart and neat.

BED AND BATH

Bedrooms are immaculate and have comfortable, top-quality beds with crisp linen, pretty patterned bedspreads and cushions, an armchair, antique-style desk, sideboard, dressing table or similar. Walls are painted in neutral tones, such as a soft peach. They're spacious and a bit more furniture, such as a sofa and coffee table, wouldn't go amiss. Shower-room décor is simple, with grey tiling, white fixtures and a walk-in shower.

Key amenities: ensuite bathroom, TV, tea and coffee facilities, free Wi-Fi

FOOD AND DRINK

The food here is interesting, not typical fare, and of a high standard, from the tasty shell-on prawns to the pan-fried sardines, and lovely almond sponge with amaretto mousse, cherry purée and sour cherry sorbet. But there are a few pub classics too.

Restaurant: refined gastropub food, modern British cuisine. Open for lunch Tue-Sun 12-2.30pm, dinner Tue-Sat 6.30-9pm. Mains from £13.75.
