This monumental 1889 building was originally a bank and was built to impress with its marble pillars, mosaic-patterned floors and grand staircase. Hotel de Rome preserves this majesty but adds a theatrical levity reflected in a lobby dominated by oversized black sofas with silver-framed mirrors and a pink neon birdcage.

Flags, doormen and smartly-uniformed staff make arriving here a pleasure. The hotel is popular for weddings, launches and lifestyle events - be sure to have a peek at the grand, chandelier-filled ballroom which was once the central banking hall. There is a lounge for smokers at the front of the hotel. Standard and electric bikes can be hired.

German TV chef Tim Mälzer has been the driving force behind the combined bar and restaurant CHIARO since October 2021. It's a buzzy, exciting venue with a summer terrace, striking art and photography and a fashionable clientele. The stimulating menu promises 'Italian cuisine refined with Japanese flavours' while breakfast feels more like brunch with its jazzy sounds and treats such as onion bread, chorizo and prosecco.

CHIARO: elegant restaurant, Italian-Japanese fusion cuisine. Open daily for breakfast and dinner. Open Mon-Fri for lunch, 12-3pm.
