OUR REVIEW

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

In the southwest corner of the Tiergarten at the junction of Drakestrasse and Thomas-Dehler-Strasse, the hotel overlooks the park and is in a quiet and well-policed neighbourhood with several embassies - the Spanish one is next door. There is street parking and Zoologischer Garten U-Bahn station is a 15-minute walk west. Berlin Zoo is on the doorstep; the hotel has a private entrance and you can buy tickets at the reception. There are also shops galore in Kurfürstendamm including the legendary KaDeWe department store.

By plane: direct flights to Berlin Brandenburg from London (1 hour 40 minutes), Manchester (1 hour 55 minutes) and Edinburgh (2 hours 5 minutes). It's a 30-minute drive to the hotel. Book flights to Berlin.

THE LOOK AND FEEL

The 1930s building has a gracefully-curved façade and monumental staircase, while an outside terrace with flamboyant African furniture is a boon in summer. Inside, Spanish designer Patricia Urquiola has created a colourful and playful home inspired by the nearby zoo; guests are welcomed with a large crocodile sculpture and the bar is home to a colourful wire mesh giraffe and chimpanzee.

THE FACILITIES

There is a small reception desk between the entrance hall and bar where you can get directions and advice from the young and helpful team. Exercise is available in the SO/ FIT gym on the first floor, which has a view of the zoo. There are also bikes for rent.

BED AND BATH

The rooms and suites are in two separate blocks with a view of the park or zoo. Floor-to-ceiling windows, king-size beds, sliding doors and Scandinavian-style furniture create a cool, if at times over-designed, look. The entry-level SO Stue rooms have a shower only.

Key amenities: ensuite bathroom with toiletries, tea and coffee-facilities, smart TV, air conditioning, free Wi-Fi

FOOD AND DRINK

The upbeat Stue Bar is an inviting spot for a cocktail with a picture window looking into the zoo and a summer terrace. The more subdued The Casual restaurant, where all meals are served, has a tasteful grey décor, a menu inspired by 'food cultures worldwide' and a private table above which hangs a fabulous explosion of shiny copper pans and utensils.

The Casual: main restaurant, Mediterranean cuisine. All-day menu, open daily. Lunch set menu from €21.
