The wow factor is on full blast in this contemporary property beside the River Spree, which combines landmark architecture with interiors exploding with colour. Add in whacky rooms with comfy beds, cocktails galore and a penchant for rock stars (think Iggy Pop grinning from the wall) and who knows what could happen?

nhow Berlin is on the east bank of the River Spree at the junction of Stralauer Allee and Naglerstrasse, in an area of revitalised docklands. A ten-minute walk north gets you to Warschauer Strasse U-Bahn and S-Bahn stations - there is a direct connection from the latter to Brandenburg Airport. Underground parking is available. The castellated Oberbraumbrücke, built in 1896, bridges the river; north of this, East Side Gallery is a poignant remnant of the Berlin Wall with striking murals.

By plane: direct flights to Berlin Brandenburg from London (1 hour 40 minutes), Manchester (1 hour 55 minutes) and Edinburgh (2 hours 5 minutes). It's a 40-minute drive to the hotel. Parking costs €18 per day. Book flights to Berlin.

Purpose-built to catch the eye with its huge mirrored overhang, this nine-storey riverside building comes with wild Pop Art interiors by Karim Rashid and an undying love of pink. Reception is a sinuous purple and white pod while a strong music biz theme is reflected in abundant black and white photos of rock stars.

The ground floor is a funky open-plan arena bundling up reception, a lounge with purple sofas, a stage for music nights, the circular Envy Bar and the kindergarten-coloured Fabrics restaurant. There's a shop with snacks and travel essentials, an art gallery, a recording studio, a gym, two types of sauna and a steam room.

Drink leads the way here - there's a choice of over 20 cocktails - while the food menu is minimal. Options include plant-based dishes, marinated salmon and currywurst. The restaurant is large, so if you want a lively ambience, go at the weekend.

nhow Restaurant: bright dining room, quirky décor. Buffet breakfast served daily.
