Hotel Review: Grand Jersey Hotel & Spa, Jersey
One of Jersey's oldest luxury hotels, the Grand has been standing guard over the Esplanade since the late 19th century. The bars and restaurants attract an upmarket local crowd. Rooms have contemporary styling and some have sea view balconies. Facilities include an Elemis spa and fitness centre and a private cinema.

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD
If it weren't for the busy main road that runs in front of it, then this position would be perfect. The hotel commands views of the large sweep of St Aubin's bay to the south of the island and out to 16th-century Elizabeth Castle (you can catch the amphibious vehicle to the castle from just outside the hotel). The shops of St Helier, as well as the bus terminal, are just a ten-minute walk away.
By plane: flights from London Heathrow to Jersey take around one hour. The hotel is a 10-minute taxi ride from the airport.
By boat: ferries to St Helier run from Poole (4 hours) and Portsmouth (10 hours 20 minutes). Book boats.
THE LOOK AND FEEL
The interiors are fresh and contemporary while period flourishes remain, such as internal columns, ornate plasterwork coving and a grand central staircase. The champagne lounge has windows overlooking the sea and mink-coloured chairs, while the all-day brasserie Victoria's has rich red curtains and black leather dining chairs.
THE FACILITIES
A large team supports this 129-room hotel with a friendly concierge able to arrange boat trips and sightseeing and direct you to the correct bus for exploring the island. There is an indoor pool with a hot tub, sauna, steam room and gym and a spa offering Elemis face and body treatments.

BED AND BATH
Bedrooms have dark wood furniture and splashes of colour in the headboard and upholstery: either red, blue, green or pink, which save them from looking overly executive. Carpeted floors have a slightly old-fashioned fleur-de-lis pattern. Bathrooms are tiled with Victorian-style basins and Handpicked's own toiletries.
Room types: Small Classic, Classic, Superior, Deluxe
Key amenities: ensuite bathroom, TV, desk, hairdryer, bathrobe and slippers
FOOD AND DRINK
You are in for a theatrical dining experience in the four AA Rosette restaurant Tassili, where chef Nicolas Valmagna is cooking creative cuisine with local ingredients, such as scallops, Jersey Royals, crab and black butter (a local apple paste made from the leftovers of cider-making).
Tassili: local ingredients, dishes inspired by Jersey and France. Open Tues-Sat 6-8.30pm. Tasting menu from £80.
Victoria's: breakfast and brasserie-style dinners.
