OUR REVIEW

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

This is a tranquil setting surrounded by 35 acres of parkland, and although the address is St Peter Port, you are about a half-hour walk from the main shops and bars of the city centre or just a short drive. Saumarez Park with the Guernsey Folk and Costume Museum is less than ten minutes away, as is Oatlands village with its tourist shops and attractions.

By plane: flights from London Heathrow to Guernsey take around 1 hour 15 minutes. The hotel is a 10-minute taxi ride from the airport.

By boat: ferries to St Peter Port run from Poole (3 hours) and Portsmouth (7 hours). Free parking available. Book boats.

THE LOOK AND FEEL

The building originates from the 19th century when it was home to a monastic order. The tell-tale high ceilings of the Victorian age remain, along with cornicing and coving, which just take the edge off the rather ubiquitous décor. The spa area, however, is ultra modern with marble and wood and mood lighting.

THE FACILITIES

The facilities here are second to none, with a nine-hole golf course, indoor heated pool, outdoor hot tub, fitness centre and exercise studios, spa treatment rooms, tennis courts, croquet lawn and even a hairdresser. Service is friendly and patient, even when the hotel is at its busiest.

The enormous Victor Hugo room serves breakfast, which includes a dish of smoked salmon on sourdough with smashed avocado.

Victor Hugo Restaurant: elegant dining room, lake views. Seasonal menu, fresh ingredients. Open daily for dinner. Mains from £17.
