Great Britain take on Canada in their third and final group stage fixture on Tuesday, already through to the knockout phase but now trying to secure top spot.

Six points taken so far, courtesy of a two-goal victory over Chile and a late win over hosts Japan, leave Team GB able to rotate the squad for this fixture if head coach Hege Riise wants to, though in theory a first-place finish in the group should yield a better fixture in the quarter-finals. If Great Britain finish top, they will play third place from either Group F or G - China PR or Australia at the start of play on the final round of games - while a second-place finish sees them play F’s runners-up, likely Brazil or Netherlands.

Canada still need a point to guarantee their own progression, though with the two best third-place sides also going through, they look in a strong position to reach the last eight regardless.

First defeat of the Olympics for GB men’s hockey team

Australia won their third straight match in the men’s hockey tournament at the Tokyo Olympics on Tuesday after putting five goals past reigning Olympic champions Argentina, while Germany also scored five to overpower Britain.

Belgium’s Red Lions brushed aside South Africa, winning 9-4, while the Netherlands beat Canada 4-2, hosts Japan earned their first point of the tournament with a 2-2 draw against New Zealand and India defeated Spain 3-0

The Germans handed Britain their first defeat of the tournament, winning 5-1, including three goals by attacker Florian Fuchs.

“This is a hiccough,” said British captain Adam Dixon.

“We’ve got to pick ourselves up now because we’ve got two big games (ahead of us) against the Dutch and the Belgians.”

Second athlete sent home from Tokyo Olympics for refusing to face Israeli opponent

A second judoka has dropped out of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics before facing Israel’s Tohar Butbul. Sudan’s Mohamed Abdalrasool weighed in for the 73-kilogram division bout on Monday but then failed to show up to face Butbul in their round 32 match. The International Judo Foundation didn’t immediately announce a reason why Abdalrasool didn’t compete. Sudanese Olympic officials also didn’t immediately comment.

Fifth Olympic medal for Charlotte Dujardin as GB claim bronze in team dressage

Charlotte Dujardin won a record-equalling fifth Olympic medal as Great Britain’s dressage team took bronze in the team final at Tokyo Equestrian Park.

Dujardin, the reigning individual dressage champion, Carl Hester and Charlotte Fry finished third behind Olympic title holders Germany and runners-up the United States

It was Britain’s third successive Olympic team medal in the sport, while 36-year-old Dujardin matched the best Olympic medal haul for a British woman of five achieved by rower Dame Katherine Grainger.

Olympic gold medal-winning gymnast says Britney Spears’ story resonates with her

Olympic gold medal-winning gymnast McKayla Maroney has spoken of her sympathy for Britney Spears over the pop star’s struggle to free herself from the conservatorship which has controlled her financial and personal decisions for over a decade.

Ms Maroney shared her account on Monday of the “physically, mentally, and emotionally” exhausting experience of speaking up over the abuse she suffered from disgraced former USA Gymnastics team doctor Larry Nassar.

Simone Biles says mental health concerns forced her to pull out of final

US gymnast Simone Biles has said she is not physically injured and withdrew from the gymnastics women's team final today to protect her mental health.

Following the event, Ms Biles said: “After the performance I did, I just didn't want to go on. I have to focus on my mental health.

“I just think mental health is more prevalent in sports right now... we have to protect our minds and our bodies and not just go out and do what the world wants us to do.”

She added: “We are not just athletes, we're people at the end of the day and sometimes you just have to step back. I did not want to go out and do something stupid and get hurt.

“I feel like a lot of athletes speaking up has really helped.

“It's so big, it's the Olympic Games, at the end of the day we don't want to be carried out of there on a stretcher. You have to be there 100 per cent or 120 per cent or you're going to hurt yourself.”

ICYMI: Naomi Osaka suffers shock exit at home Olympics

Tennis star Naomi Osaka suffered a shock defeat in the third round of the women’s singles earlier today as the Czech Republic’s Marketa Vondrousova pulled off one of the biggest upsets of Tokyo 2020 so far.

Ms Osaka had hoped to play a starring role at her home Games after lighting the Olympic flame at the opening ceremony.

UN agency says it wants to help Venezuelan boxer for Refugee Olympic Team

The UN’s refugee agency has said it wants to help a Venezuelan boxer who fought in Tokyo for the Refugee Olympic Team this week, a day after his father said he could not return to Trinidad and Tobago where he had been living.

Eldric Sella was defeated in his opening match against the Dominican Republic's Euri Cedeno, cutting short the Olympic aspirations of the 24-year-old boxer who in 2018 fled his home country for Trinidad and Tobago.

In an interview with Venezuelan online broadcaster VPItv, his father Edward Sella said his son was not able to return to the Caribbean nation.

“UNHCR is in discussions to assess the most appropriate solution for Eldric Sella and his family,” a spokesperson for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees told Reuters.

“We are very proud of Eldric's achievements as part of the Refugee Olympic Team and are grateful for all the support provided to him and his family thus far.”

It was not immediately clear why Mr Sella would be unable to return to Trinidad and Tobago, where he had sought asylum.

Netherlands’ Miedema breaks Olympic women’s football record in just three games

Netherlands player Vivianne Miedema has broken the record for the most goals scored in a single Olympic women’s football tournament after just three games of Tokyo 2020.

Ms Miedema beat the previous record of six goals, set by Canada’s Christine Sinclair in 2012, on Tuesday when she scored two goals in her country’s 8-2 victory over China.

The 25-year-old footballer scored four goals in the Netherlands’ 10-3 win over Zambia and two in a 3-3 draw with Brazil earlier this month.
