Revellers enjoy 176th Grand National at Aintree

I Am Maximus won the 2024 Grand National at Aintree in a topsy-turvy race where a winner couldn’t be called until the final straight. The 2023 champion Corach Rambler unseated jockey Derek Fox at the first fence which opened up the field for the rest of the riders.

Glengouly set the early pace fighting for the front with Foxy Jacks as the experienced jockeys looked to position themselves in the middle of the pack. Kitty’s Light moved up to third with Latenightpass and Galia Des Liteaux making charges towards the front of the field.

Rachael Blackmore’s Minella Indo and Jack Kennedy’s Delta Work - both 28/1- battled for the lead as Paul Townend and I Am Maximus kicked on.

Blackmore leapt the last slightly ahead but didn’t have the staying power, as I Am Maximus swept past and stormed to the finish line to win with ease – handing trainer Willie Mullins his second Grand National victory after Hedgehunter in 2005.

And they’re off! There were a lot of jittery horses as they stepped up to the tape. Plenty of them were keen to head off and it’s a first time release.

Mr Incredible was slow to get away.

4pm - Randox Grand National

The horses have been led out onto the course and have been shown the first fence ahead of trotting back to the start line. A change for this year means there’ll be a standing start for the race to keep the field spread out but the time they reach the first jump.

Grand National LIVE

Two-time Grand National winner Ruby Walsh, speaking to ITV: “I do approve of the changes and Aintree have put a lot of work into it.

“As the race evolved and moved forward, the riders were pushed towards the middle of the course. In 2023, only a third of the track was being used and that is why six runners had to be taken out.

“A standing start will hopefully keep them spread out from the start.”
