OUR REVIEW

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

Kingham is a gorgeous little Cotswolds village without the crowds you'll battle in places like Burford or Bourton-on-the-Water. It's just a 25-minute walk from the train station, making it an ideal car-free break for couples seeking lovely strolls in the countryside, and it's right in the heart of the village. Daylesford Organic is part garden centre, part farm shop, part spa. Come here for fancy lunches and to spend, spend, spend on posh Cotswold-made products.

By car: around 1 hour 20 mins from Bristol, 2 hours from London and 3 hours from Manchester. There is free parking on-site.

By train: there are direct trains to Kingham from Oxford (25 minutes) and London Paddington (1 hour 30 mins). Book trains to Kingham.

THE LOOK AND FEEL

This little country pub has reams of style. Its restaurant is all Persian rugs and rich red walls, while the cosy but bright bar area has handsome exposed beams and beautiful kilim carpets. A huge fireplace in the bar will keep you cosy on cold days, and the bedrooms are lovely and light with neutral colours interspersed with duck-egg blues and rosy reds.

THE FACILITIES

It's all about personal service here, with little bottles of fresh milk delivered to your room on arrival and knowledgeable, smiling staff to offer advice on local walks and things to do. Nothing is too much trouble for the people working here.

FOOD AND DRINK

Food is the main event here, with owners who have worked with the likes of Raymond Blanc and Jamie Oliver. The Kingham Plough makes the most of its Cotswolds location and brings in food from many of the region's top makers. Don't miss out on the bread before dinner from Marks Cotswold Bakery and the local Hook Norton Brewery ales on tap.
