OUR REVIEW

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

You're in Mitte, on the south side of Oranienburger Strasse (the S-Bahn station is right beside the hostel). This is a vibrant neighbourhood with independent shops, international restaurants and lively bars, plus plenty of cultural sights that can be reached on foot: Monbijou Park and the shops of Hackescher Markt are nearby, whilst Musuemsinsel, with its monumental museums including the new Humboldt Forum, is within easy reach.

By plane: direct flights to Berlin Brandenburg from London and Manchester (both around 1 hour 50 minutes) and Edinburgh (2 hours 5 minutes). It's a 40-minute drive to the hostel. Book flights to Berlin.

THE LOOK AND FEEL

This historic seven-storey building faces a central courtyard and can be confusing to get around. Fortunately, the bedroom doors are painted with large numbers (handy if you've had a few) and you soon get used to the cut-back style - rooms don't have glasses, for example, and if you have valuables you'll need to pay for a locker.

THE FACILITIES

If your roommates are a pain, there's a chill-out lounge with books and easy chairs, while the outside courtyard has coloured metal chairs plus table tennis and football. A laundry and ironing room are available along with an ATM and photo booth. You can also hire bikes and skateboards. Note that check-out is at 10 am.

BED AND BATH

The rooms are split between shared (where you pay per person) and private (where you pay per room). These include bunk bed-filled dormitories sleeping eight, six and four, some of which are women-only. There are also 32 conventional double rooms of varying sizes; in these, walls are painted black, white and grey with a bare wood headboard and abundant hooks.

Room types: Dorm, Deluxe Room, Private Room, Junior Suite, Superior Suite

Key amenities: Generator toiletries, towels, reading light, free Wi-Fi

FOOD AND DRINK

You're not allowed to bring food and drink into your room, but snacks, pizza, beer and cocktails can be purchased in a ground floor café, and there are plenty more options in the surrounding streets. A basic buffet breakfast is served in a canteen decorated with plants and murals where guests sit at communal wooden tables with red and black stools.

Gen Café: canteen-style café and breakfast room. Open daily, 24-hour.
