OVERVIEW

'Love the price, love the design' say the breakfast placemats, and that's the USP of this nine-floor chain hotel that pairs a large, welcoming lounge with small, cheerful rooms. We'd also say 'love the location' - check in here and you'll be close to a wealth of sights and the transport nerve centre of Alexanderplatz.

OUR REVIEW

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

Hackescher Markt is on the corner of Dircksenstrasse and Rosa-Luxemburg-Strasse. The transport hub of Alexanderplatz is a short walk south so you're in pole position for exploring. Close to the city's medieval heart, this remains a busy neighbourhood with swishing trams, graffiti-daubed streets and lots of energy. Nearby, you'll find Hackesche Höfe, a 1907 courtyard complex that's now home to indie shops and cafés, and the Berliner DDR Motorrad Museum filled with vintage wheels.

By plane: direct flights to Berlin Brandenburg from London (1 hour 40 minutes), Manchester (1 hour 55 minutes) and Edinburgh (2 hours 5 minutes). It's a 45-minute drive to the hotel. Parking costs €18 per day. Book flights to Berlin.

THE LOOK AND FEEL

A large ground floor area known as 'One Lounge' multi-tasks successfully as a reception, bar, lounge and remote working space. The style is eclectic, featuring upcycled wood, retro chairs, Danish lights and bottle-green tiled pillars all united beneath a black ceiling with exposed pipes. Whether you're here to tap the laptop or meet friends for a cocktail, it works.

THE FACILITIES

If you can cope with their bright turquoise shirts, the staff are a friendly and committed bunch who genuinely want to help, for example, printing out documents and offering advice on the area. The bedrooms don't have a phone so you'll have to use your own or go down to reception if you need something.

BED AND BATH

The rooms fill nine floors of an unexceptional modern block on a street corner overlooking railway lines. The style is uniform featuring a queen or king-sized bed with two single duvets, turquoise cushions and curtains, a writing desk, coat rail and safe. The small granite bathrooms have a shower.

Key amenities: ensuite bathroom with Motel One organic toiletries, hairdryer, flat-screen TV, desk and chair, free Wi-Fi

FOOD AND DRINK

There's no restaurant but you can get nibbles and toasted sandwiches from the bar, plus a wide choice of drinks. Breakfast is an easygoing buffet featuring Fairtrade coffee, organic yoghurt, fruit, cheese and pastries served in the lounge - an inviting spot to check your phone and plan the day.

One Lounge: cosy lounge and bar. Toasties and bar snacks. Open daily, 24-hour service.
