Our Top Picks

To get the most out of your child’s toy kitchen, one thing is for sure, you need to invest in a good set of accessories. By spending a little, it will make that tired play kitchen come alive and give it a new lease of life.

Designed to build confidence, creativity and social skills in a fun and imaginative way, role play allows children to get into a character and act out real life scenarios, so it’s no surprise that there are thousands of toys designed to spark your little one’s imagination.

Many toy brands have their own line of kitchen role play toys. Gone are the days of small plastic plates and cups, noisy toy telephones and neon coloured plastic fruit and veg, many products look so chic you’d happily have them in your own kitchen.

We reviewed these play kitchen accessories with the help of our four-year-old tester, and because we know they’ll be getting a lot of use (if you pick the right ones, like the list below), we were looking out for quality manufacturing, but also the right weight and size for children to play with ease.

Many of these accessories are wooden, which not only looks good but also lasts. A more sustainable choice than other materials, you can count on these becoming well-loved play-time favourites for generations to come.

It’s also about the finer details. Kids love things that twist, make a noise when shaken, or dials with clicking sounds, all of which heighten the role play experience, naturally garnering extra points with our tester.

You can trust our independent reviews. We may earn commission from some of the retailers, but we never allow this to influence selections, which are formed from real-world testing and expert advice. This revenue helps to fund journalism across The Independent.

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and the geniuses at JoJo Maman Bebe know this all too well, creating this fabulous wooden set for little ones. Encouraging imaginative and social play, it comes with all you need for a perfect breakfast for two (23 wooden pieces) – there are plates, knives and spoons, a toaster, toast rack and butter dish. But, what will really capture your child’s attention is the special details, such as the honey and jam jars with screw lids, the Velcro on the bread loaf, butter and eggs meaning you can attach pieces together, and the wooden dial on the toaster that clicks when moved and a handle to push the toast up or down. Breakfast is well and truly served!

Great Little Trading Company piccolo play cafe

Piccolo-Play-Cafe -Great-Little-Trading-Company-indybest-best-kids-toy-play-kitchen-accessories.jpg

While having a pizza oven alongside your toy kitchen may sound a little extra, this really is a top-notch addition which will see hours of imaginative play. The devil is in the detail here: It's made from sturdy, painted wood and the extra touches, like the bricks around the oven and illustrated hob, are great. Our little pizza chef enjoyed discovering that the mini pepper mill grinds and pretending to grate cheese. The pizza bases have a slight rim, meaning that all the ingredients (you have peppers, mushrooms, pepperoni and tomato slices to choose from) don't slide off once fully loaded and transitioned from the pizza paddle into the oven. It’s worth noting that this does require assembly, but the instructions were clear – it took us just under 30 minutes to put together.

Our four-year-old tester couldn’t wait to tuck into these food crates from Big Jigs. With plenty of items fresh from the farm, such as yoghurt, cheese, fruit juice, bread and veggies, your budding chef will be creating delicious meals in no time. It’s a wonderful way to teach little ones about the importance of a healthy and balanced diet, while also explaining where food comes from and how meals are prepared. You’ll get 21 pieces in total, all of which are made from responsibly sourced and high-quality wood. Our favourite bit? The crates themselves, making light work of the post-playing kitchen tidy.

Ready, steady, bake… Le Toy Van’s honeybake range dominates the play kitchen scene and for good reason. The mixer set has been ethically made from sustainable rubberwood and designed in England. Decorated with non-toxic paints, it features a moving whisk – which is operated by a simple turn dial and can be tilted – a rolling pin, and a bowl. There’s a cool retro feel to this smoothie blender by French toy brand Djeco. Our four-year-old tester loves smoothies so naturally, she couldn’t wait to get mixing. There’s a selection of felt fruit pieces, two plastic cups and the blender which is a stylish combination of wood and plastic. Simply turn the handle and whizz up a healthy fruity treat, you’ll see the felt fruits dancing around inside the blender, and you can even garnish the glass with one of the larger orange pieces.

Janod breakfast set

Take an imaginary trip to France with this wooden set; the main focus being the chic coffee machine which comes with three wooden coffee pods. Petit baristas can slot a capsule into the top of the machine, choose how much coffee to pour by using to the turning clicking button and then serve in a cool espresso mug. Of course, no French breakfast is complete without a pastry on the side. You can’t fault the cool design, which would look just as swish in a grown-up kitchen.

Kid’s Concept scales bistro

One glance and you know this is true Scandinavian design. Wonderfully simple yet easy on the eye, the wooden set has been lovingly handmade and painted in water-based paint, which gets a big thumbs up from us. There are six weights to place on the scales, allowing little ones to experiment with weighing and counting. Turns out that the weights also make great additions to a dolls house, as these soon became little people in ours.

Every toy kitchen needs this accessory set to allow a full cooking experience for budding chefs. With 22 pieces to get stuck into, set the timer, sauté, simmer, bake and boil, and don’t forget to season with the salt and pepper shakers. All the pieces are durable, which our rather noisy, heavy-handed little tester can concur. It’s also handy to be able to clean some of the plastic products in the top rack of the dishwasher. The included oven mitt and dish towel were stand-out features.

The verdict: Play kitchen accessories

JoJo Maman Bebe’s wooden breakfast set is great for sparking young imaginations, with Velcro sticking, a popping toaster and fun condiments, the 23 piece is the perfect addition to a toy kitchen. We also loved Great Little Trading Co’s piccolo play cafe, while it’s a more extravagant purchase, it goes the extra mile in terms of creativity.
