Aisle 16 invites poets to find inspiration in Tom Cruise's Cocktail

I am the world's last barman poet/ I see America drinking the cocktails I make/ America's getting stinking on things I stir or shake." So begins the worst performance-poem ever. When Tom Cruise hopped up on to the bar in the 1988 film, Cocktail, little did he know he was damning a whole generation of young men into believing that performance-poetry was a no-talent-necessary route to getting girls. When Tom rhymes "snazzy" with "kamikaze", a beautiful woman yells: "Give me a kiss you sexy beast!" If we're being generous to the film, it's readable as a critique of both cocktail waiters and performance poets: all flare, no content. At the end of the poem, the bar erupts in to a chant which, in all my years of attending readings, I'm still waiting to experience first-hand: "More poems! More poems!"

DVD: Remember Me (12)

Take the world’s most popular undead actor and the worst member of the cast of Lost, throw in Pierce Brosnan’s impression of a Wall Street banker imitating Vito Corleone and what do you get? Very little, it seems, as this lightweight romantic drama depicting the tangled lives of two New York students goes to show.

An assured Rattigan revival proves there's dramatic life in the drawing room yet, while a musical 'Love Story' is saccharine but leaves a sour taste

Ethan Hawke joins the NYPD and leaves criminals star-struck

It's a beautiful character," Ethan Hawke enthuses, "who in the first scene commits a murder, and in the second goes to confession and then can't confess. He feels he's got 200 pounds on his shoulders, a giant gorilla on his back, which is that he's failed his wife."

Dear John (12A)

Lasse Hallström's extraordinarily dull and earnest romantic drama stars Channing Tatum as a brooding hulk, and Amanda Seyfried as the petite southern belle he meets on the beach.
