SHOW PEOPLE JULIE DELPY

I sat in the front row at the Neuilly pantos

I NOTE with an interest not uncoupled with enthusiasm that my old benefactor and quaffing partner Mr Mohamed Al-Fayed (dread name]) has completed the thankless task of restoring the old Neuilly home (or Brand Neuilly Home - I pun]]) of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor.

FILM / Hits of 1993

Steven Spielberg's 'Jurassic Park' fulfils the hype by crushing the competition and scaling the top of the 1993 box-office chart (grosses calculated from 4 December 1992 to 28 November 1993). Even with the advantage of opening six months earlier, the runners-up - the Whitney Huston / Kevin Costner weepie 'The Bodyguard' and Macauley Culkin reprising the role that made him in 'Home Alone 2' - took less than half as much at the box-office. It's a sad reflection on Britain's film industry that every film in the chart was produced in America.

BOOK REVIEW / A gift horse with a nasty bite: Gifts by Nuruddin Farah, Serif pounds 9.99

THE giving and receiving of gifts - so fundamental in human affairs - is seldom a simple matter. According to the celebrated Somali writer Nuruddin Farah, gifts may be used as instruments of domination; they may corrupt despite the good intentions of the giver.

CINEMA / Looking after Number One: The Bodyguard (12)

WHY trust haircuts? They seem such frivolous things, mere chop and change, yet they remain one of the most accurate guides to cinema. Photographs of Harpo Marx at home show a mild, ordinary man; add the wig, however, and all hell breaks loose - a burst of blond bubbles, suggesting that his brain was made of bath foam. It was. Brando grew his hair long for Last Tango in Paris, which suited the louche old goat he was playing; then razed it off for Apocalypse Now, which was perfect for his bloated Buddha. But even he got it wrong with the white locks of Superman: most people thought he had just spent five minutes under a Mr Whippy dispenser. One glimpse, and you knew the film was a no-no.
