It’s raining, it’s pouring, but that doesn’t mean your style credentials should be snoring.

With heavy rain, gusty winds, hail, thunder and lightening on the cards for much of England and Wales this week, knowing what to wear is likely to prove tricky.

Luckily, this is where a waterproof jacket comes in. While technical wear has earned itself a bad reputation for being frumpy, dull and reserved for outdoorsy types, it is – save, perhaps, for an umbrella – the best way to stay dry on damp and dreary days.

The good news is that raincoats have come a long way since the oversized and brashly coloured mac you wore as a child.

In fact, outerwear is having a real moment in the fashion world with everything from traditional trench coats and sporty shell jackets to Scandi-style numbers up for grabs.

The humble raincoat has even become a highly coveted piece on the runway for autumn/winter 2019 (AW19).

Prada’s military-inspired padded versions are some of the season’s standouts, while Burberry offered a new-season update on its timeless trench with a tailored style.

Elsewhere Hunter and Danish brands like Rains and Ganni have been gaining traction on the high street with simplified rubber offerings and bold styles that tap fashion fans’ love of all things animal print.
