Online sales for Boxing Day predicted to hit almost £2 billion
With tier 4 restrictions coming down on London and the South East as well as a national lockdown in Wales, high-street sales are set to plummet by 54 per cent during this year’s Boxing Day sales.
Figures from the Centre for Retail Research reveal online spending is predicted to increase 56 per cent from 2019 to 2020, while the PM’s announcement of new local lockdowns caused the total spend estimate for the 2020 Boxing Day period to drop by 17 per cent from the original forecast. They added that London spending will be most hard hit by the new measures.
“In tiers 1, 2 and 3, retailers can continue to trade so the picture is mixed. However, the impact on spending in Scotland and Wales – which are both bringing in new lockdown measures from Boxing Day – as well as areas in England that are already in tier 4, is severe,” Anita Naik, Lifestyle Editor at VoucherCodes.co.uk, commented.
