Pack away your winter woollies and rich deep burgundy nail shades and move into spring with one of this season's brand new nail polish colours. Here's our edit.

1. Autograph Gel Effect Nail Colour in Rouge and Tomato: £6 each, marksandspencer.com

Another stellar line up of this season's essential nail shades from M&S. Pick of the best is Rouge, the perfect punchy coral and Tomato, a fabulous pinky red. Against golden summer skin, both shades really pop. And the brushes are superb - slightly more generous than standard brushes, making application fast and easy. Quick-drying, ultra glossy and new plumping technology makes nails look professionally done in just a few minutes. And only one coat is needed for a streak-free finish.

2.Christian Louboutin Beaute Nail Colour in Alta Perla: £36, selfridges.com

Christian was uninspired by the prototype for the first Louboutin shoe – something was missing. Close by, his assistant was painting her nails, he took the polish, painted the bottom of the shoe, and the iconic red glossy sole was born. His new beauty line has gone full circle with the launch of Christian Louboutin Nail Colours. They’re ultra-glossy and highly-pigmented to amplify the colour in just two coats. Inspired by calligraphy, paint brushes and 17 and 18 century European architecture, the bottles are a real work of art. From vanilla and chocolates to soft pinks and khakis, 'The Nudes' have beautiful rose gold caps to complement the softness of the shades, and Alta Perla, a soft mushroom, is our pick of the lot.

3. Nails Inc Blossom: £15, debenhams.com

Worn on top of a favourite spring pastel, or alone, these pretty blossom-inspired polishes blend white and coloured 'petals' within the polish. Cherry Garden Street is a mix of apricot, hot pink and white, 'Bloomsbury Way' is baby blue, candy floss pink and white, 'Covent Garden Mews' is pale green and pale pink and 'Columbia Road' is lilac, hot pink and white.

4. Bourjois So Laque Glossy Nail Enamel in Prepp'hibiscus: £5.99, boots.com

Bourjois is another inexpensive high-street brand that out-performs many of the prestige nail polishes. Ultra glossy, extra plumping and with an easy to apply one coat application. This bold pinky red suits all skin tones and looks particularly brilliant on olive toned skin.

5. Dolce & Gabbana The Nail Lacquer in Blue Angel: £20, harrods.com

The intense cobalt blues from autumn winter are softened and carried through into spring and summer. This glossy fresh shade is part of their vivid spring palette, packed with playful and contrasting colours. 'Blue Angel' sits perfectly between edgy and pretty.

6. Michael Kors Nail Lacquer in Blush and Day Dreamer: £15, houseoffraser.co.uk

I'm hard pressed to choose between these two brand new spring shades. 'Day Dreamer' is pretty baby pink with an iridescent sheen, while 'Blush' is the best cool matte nude, almost a pinky mushroom, that I've ever seen.

9. OPI Nail Lacquer in That's Hula-rious!: £7.95, nailpolishdirect.co.uk

This season's must have green is somewhere between pistachio and mint chocolate chip ice cream. And OPI consistently lead the way in trend-led colours, combined with such good formulations, it's a favourite brand with nail technicians.

10. Essie Nail Lacquer in Pedal Pushers: £7.99, boots.com

Our love affair with grey seems never ending in our interiors, sartorial and beauty choices. And this chic pastel lavender grey is a nod in that direction. Wear it with one coat for a soft wash, and two or three coats for a more intense colour.

Verdict
If money is no object, then the Christian Louboutin Nail Colour is stunning - the bottles are a work of art and the polish is luxuriously glossy. But you could buy the whole range of Autograph Gel Effect Nail Colours for less than one Louboutin and their quality is phenomenal. Rich, glossy, packed with plumping technology and an extra wide brush gives a professional finish in minutes. Best polish I've used in a long time – by a long way.
