Our Top Picks

Arguably the most versatile product in your make-up bag, a good concealer can hide blemishes, disguise dark circles and brighten the complexion, all while blending seamlessly into your natural skin.

Asians tend to suffer from hyperpigmentation and dark circles under the eyes due to genetics, which can make finding a concealer in the right shade and undertone an extremely difficult task.

Your skin’s shade is the colour you would describe your skin as, for example light, medium, tan or dark. Whereas your undertone, is the subtle hue underneath the skin’s surface. There are three main undertones: warm (yellow or olive), cool (red or pink) and neutral (no obvious colouring other than your base tone).

While most Asian skins tend to have an undertone which leans more peachy or golden, it’s important to determine which category you fall under when choosing a concealer. You can do this by looking at the veins on the underside of your wrist – on those with warm undertones veins appear more greenish, while on cool toned skin they appear blue or purple.

For increased pigmentation under the eyes, we recommend formulas with peachy or yellow undertones to counteract darkness. But, if spot concealing on the face is your main concern, look for a concealer which not only suits your skin shade, but also blends seamlessly with your skin’s undertone.

In recent years, the beauty industry has seen a promising rise in the number of brands catering to a variety of different skin colours and undertones. We scoured the market to find the concealers (both cream and liquid) which have inclusive shade ranges, stayed put throughout the day and felt comfortable on the skin.

Laura Mercier flawless fusion ultra longwear concealer

laura-mercier-ultra-longwear-concealer.jpg

A perfect all-rounder, this concealer worked just as well to brighten and conceal dark circles as it did to cover imperfections and hyperpigmentation. We loved how hydrating and creamy this felt on the skin, especially under the eyes where there was minimal creasing. Living up to its name, the product dries to a comfortable, velvety finish which looks flawless on the skin. After a full day, this concealer still looked as fresh on our Asian skin as it did when it was first applied. The product comes in 22 shades, with each stating whether it has a cool, warm or neutral undertone. We loved the warm-toned shades which have a rich golden pigment that is perfect for brightening under the eyes.

2
Uoma stay woke luminous brightening concealer

uoma-beauty-stay-woke-concealer.jpg

This concealer comes in 17 shades with a spectrum of cool, neutral and warm undertones which gave us plenty of choice when picking our colour. This formula is really hydrating, and leaves a radiant, satin sheen on the skin. Those with dry skin will love this, but we do recommend setting with powder as it creased under the eyes when we didn’t. For spot concealing, we loved that this blended seamlessly into the skin when dabbed on with the fingers. While the first layer of this formula gives a medium coverage, it is easy to build without getting cakey.

3
Bobbi Brown intensive skin serum concealer

Formulated especially for use under the eyes, this weightless concealer did wonders in covering up our dark circles. As the name suggests, the formula not only provides coverage but is infused with skincare ingredients such as bamboo grass, which helps to treat and brighten skin. Aside from how plump and bright this concealer made our under eye look, it also stayed crease-proof throughout the day even when it wasn’t set with powder. The 17 colour shade range has both peachy and yellow undertones which will help brighten Asian under eyes.

4
Nars soft matte complete concealer

nars-concealer.jpg

If there is one brand Asians should have on their radar for base make-up, its Nars. Its expansive shade range covers every undertone and the soft matte complete concealer, available in 30 different shades, is no different. Although a cream formula, this gives a comfortable matte finish which never feels drying, thanks to being infused with a humectant—hyaluronic acid. This concealer promises to blur imperfections, which we found to be true when using to spot conceal blemishes. Under the eyes it was best tapped on with the fingers as this warms up the product. Once on it did not crease even without setting.

5
Kevyn Aucoin the sensual skin enhancer

We challenge you to find a concealer with more pigment and coverage than this one. While the thickness of this cream formula can be daunting at first, just a tiny amount applied with a damp beauty sponge gives the most flawless, high coverage without feeling heavy on the skin. Available in 16 shades with arrange of undertones, we are confident that this can cover even the darkest of under eye circles. While we recommend moisturising well before using this as it can cling to dry patches, once applied and set with powder, this concealer will stay put through the entire day due to its waterproof formula.

6
Cover FX power play concealer

cover-fx-concealer.jpg

This lightweight formula, available in 29 shades, provides a medium coverage that feels hydrating on the skin. While it certainly lived up to its promise of being crease-proof under the eyes, our tester found that on her oily skin it did start to separate on certain areas of the face throughout the day. However, if you have a dry to normal skin type this is a great choice as it’s non-drying and has a natural skin-like finish when blended out with a beauty sponge. We also loved that the undertones in the formula are extremely pronounced, for example the golden shades are noticeably more yellow than some of the other warm-toned concealers on the market.

E.L.F Cosmetics hydrating camo concealer

elf-concealer.jpg

This affordable full coverage concealer leaves a dewy finish on the skin which is perfect for those with mature skin or who suffer from dryness. Although we loved the radiant finish, we found it wasn’t as lightweight as some of the other concealers in this round-up. On our oily skin, this brightened under the eyes and passed the longevity test when set with powder, but it did separate on blemishes on the rest of the face. Choose from 25 shades in a range of different undertones.

Dose of Colors meet your hue concealer

dose-of-colours-concealer.jpg

If it’s a combination of hydration and full coverage that you are after, look to this formula. We were pleasantly surprised on first use of this concealer, which instantly erased hyperpigmentation and left our skin looking plump and flawless. This could be contributed to the added shea butter and vitamin E which make for a creamy formula that blends out seamlessly, while also blurring pores and texture on the skin. Although hydrating, the concealer leaves a soft-matte finish which stayed put on our skin all day with minimal creasing under the eyes. This is available in 30 shades and a range of undertones.

9
Morphe fluidity full coverage concealer

morphe-concealer.jpg

Extremely lightweight, this concealer blends into the skin with minimal effort. While it didn’t quite live up to its claim of being full coverage – we found it to be more medium – it is buildable enough to cover dark under eye circles. We also loved how its thin consistency felt on the rest of our face when using it to cover blemishes and hyperpigmentation, without looking cakey or settling into fine lines or pores. Choose from 31 shades in peach, neutral, pink and golden undertones.

10
Fenty Beauty pro filt’r instant retouch concealer

fenty-beauty-concealer.png

If you’re struggling to find a shade which matches your undertone, Fenty Beauty should be your first stop. This concealer comes in a whopping 50 shades in a range of undertones. While the formula feels comfortable on the skin, we recommend making sure the eye area is well hydrated before applying. We found that the concealer did have the tendency to accentuate creases under the eyes if we hadn’t moisturised the area well. This sets to a natural looking, soft-matte finish and lasts well throughout the day, only showing signs of separation after more than seven hours.

11
Huda Beauty overachiever concealer

huda-beauty-concealer.png

One of the longest wearing formulas we tried, Huda Beauty’s concealer is ideal for those looking for full coverage that stays put. Available in 20 shades, the formula is extremely creamy but dries to a soft matte finish. We found that even without setting with powder, this lasted well on our skin and did not separate as the day went on. Those who suffer with puffy under eyes in the morning will love the metal-tip applicator which delivers an instant cooling effect. However, sensitive skins should err on the side of caution as this concealer does have some noticeable fragrance.
