13:50 Newmarket – Crystal Caprice – 1pt e/w @ 20/1

Crystal Caprice was a promising sort last season, winning a Yarmouth maiden third time up before following it up with successes in handicap company at Goodwood and Ascot. That led to a first tilt at a stakes race when taking in this contest and she ran well to finish a close third.

Since that, however, the wheels have come off for the most part and despite being well-supported in the market, she bombed out at Royal Ascot. A few months have passed without a run and based on how she performed there, something physical must have been holding her back.

There was promise in her penultimate start when fourth behind Al Husn in an Ayr Listed race over 1m 2f and if she has come right again at home, I see no reason why she won’t be competitive in this. Four places are up for grabs and whilst her well-being is a worry, 20/1 is worth the risk attached.

17:55 Newmarket – Sudden Ambush – 1pt @ 7/2

Sudden Ambush arrived at Goodwood last month as a horse in fine form and was sent off at 3/1, but had no previous on a properly soft surface. It didn’t suit him at all and yielded a disappointing finishing effort, one that led to him coming home last of the five runners.

The run before that is what I’ll judge him on, as he finished second to Bopedro over a mile on the July course. That was a really good effort, coming in a tongue-tie for the first time, and showed that he’s more than capable of winning from a mark of 86, which he’s running off again today.

Being by Cracksman out of a Teofilo mare, there shouldn’t be a problem with tackling 1m 1f and if Oisin Murphy can get him into a good rhythm, he must be a player. The faster ground will be in his favour anyway and further progression may be in the locker as he’s still only a three-year-old.
