Arsenal will be out to put the disappointment of last weekend's loss to Newcastle behind them when they host Sevilla in the Champions League on Wednesday (TNT Sports 2, 8pm).
The Gunners saw their unbeaten start to the Premier League season ended on Saturday by the Magpies in controversial circumstances.
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta was left fuming by several refereeing decisions that didn’t go his team’s way at St James’ Park, but will need to swiftly regain is focus for Arsenal's matchday four assignment.
The north London side face a crunch home European encounter with Sevilla as they seek to secure a spot in the last 16.
Arsenal recorded a 2-1 win in Seville a fortnight ago and the Champions League odds make them favourites to come out on top again at the Emirates Stadium.
The Gunners lead Group B by a point from Lens, with Sevilla entering the second half of the group phase in third, three points adrift of second place.
Diego Alonso’s men have gone three games unbeaten since losing to Arsenal but face a big step up in quality from their recent opponents here.
Bookmakers don’t give Sevilla much hope of ending their ongoing 14-game winless run in European away matches and we’re backing Arsenal to come out on top as part of our predictions.
Gunners can fire early
The Gunners were left smarting after the loss at Newcastle having played well enough to take something from that game.
The 1-0 defeat was their second loss in a row, West Ham having dumped them out of the EFL Cup last Wednesday.
A response is expected when Arsenal return to the Emirates Stadium, even with their top scorer in the Champions League, Gabriel Jesus, still missing.
Thomas Partey is also out, while Martin Odegaard is a doubt with the hip injury that sidelined him for the Newcastle game.
Enough quality remains for Arteta to select a strong side though and Sevilla may find themselves out of the game by half-time.
Arsenal were 3-0 up at the interval of their last Champions League home game against PSV Eindhoven and a win here would see them take a giant step towards qualification for the last 16.
They should be keen to make a statement after two straight defeats too.
Arsenal had scored in 17 consecutive matches dating back to last season before drawing a blank at Newcastle and may get the first goal of the night against a Sevilla side that’s fallen behind in three of their four games under new boss Alonso.
The Andalusians battled back to draw two of those games against Cadiz and Celta Vigo in the league, but this is not a classic Sevilla side, despite them being the current Europa League holders.
The Gunners did a good job of keeping Sevilla at arm’s length for most of the reverse fixture – Sevilla managed just two shots on target – and the visitors may not offer much going forward.
At the back, Sevilla could be without the highly decorated Sergio Ramos, who has sat out the last two games with a calf injury. The guile and experience of the four-time Champions League winner would be sorely missed on a night when Sevilla's defence will be stretched and potentially breached early on.
Arsenal have scored in the first half in six of their last eight home games and a goal in the opening 45 minutes can set them on their way to victory. We’re backing Arsenal to be ahead at half-time and full-time in BoyleSports’s double result market at 10/11.
Arsenal vs Sevilla Tip 1: Arsenal-Arsenal double result – 10/11 with BoyleSports
Rice coming to the boil
There’s no doubt Arsenal’s midfield lacks a spark without Odegaard in the side and they’ll need to show more cutting edge than was demonstrated at Newcastle.
Kai Havertz is struggling to make an impact following his summer switch from Chelsea, but the Gunners’ other big off-season purchase could be ready to show his attacking qualities.
Declan Rice has been an outstanding performer for Arsenal and has more to offer than most defensive midfielders, registering at least one shot on goal in Arsenal’s last two league games.
Odegaard was absent for both those matches and Rice appears to have more license to get forward without the Norwegian in the team.
Only two sides have allowed more shots per game on average than Sevilla (17.3) in this season’s Champions League and Rice may get an opportunity to let fly.
Arsenal vs Sevilla Tip 2: Declan Rice over 0.5 shots on target – 2/1 with bet365
Arsenal could be put on the spot
No side has played more Premier League games to feature a penalty than Arsenal this season and it’s worth considering the price on football betting sites for a spot kick in this clash.
The Gunners have been awarded six penalties in the top flight, with officials pointing to the spot in three of their last six outings at the Emirates Stadium.
The referee in charge on Wednesday is Romania’s Istvan Kovacs and he has a strong track record for penalties.
Five of the last 10 Champions League games he’s taken charge of have featured at least one penalty, while Kovacs awarded three spot kicks in the same game between Bayer Leverkusen and Porto last year.
With our last Arsenal vs Sevilla prediction, we’re backing a penalty to be awarded at 15/8 with bet365.
Arsenal vs Sevilla Tip 3: A penalty in the match – 15/8 with bet365
