19.07 Oxford – Trap 1 Kanturk Range – 1pt @ 5/2 

Kanturk Range has won four of his last eight races and has only been out of the first two once in that period. That came on his latest start and he had his excuses when, after looking sure to turn in a very handy slot next to the rails, a rival cut across him at a vital moment, stopping him in his stride.

Before that, Kanturk Range had been proving tough to beat into the first bend and he again looks sure to dominate his rivals on the inside early from a perfect draw next to the rails. If, as expected, he takes the lead going into the first bend, he would be very hard to beat.

The main danger is likely to be trap five runner Glenhead Tiger. A handy sprinter, he has the speed to go into the first bend with the best of them over this longer trip and may well shade a first bend lead. 

If that is the case, he generally stays middle to wide rounding the first couple of turns and Kanturk Range could have plenty of room to slip through on the inside before asserting along the back stretch. He’s currently 11/4 on greyhound betting sites.

20.06 Nottingham – Trap 3 Velvet Madrid – 1pt @ 1/1 

Fast-improving pups are often receive interest from a betting perspective and trainer Peter Holland has found a very decent youngster in Velvet Madrid. After taking the eye in a couple of introductory trials at Nottingham, she got into a muddle when odds-on for her debut run and was soundly beaten.

However, she learnt plenty from the experience and has improved rapidly since, winning three races on the spin in all-the-way fashion. The first two were over the 500-metre trip, but this slightly shorter 480-metre course suits her perfectly, as she demonstrated when thrashing her rivals in the heats last week.

A similar effort tonight will make Velvet Madrid tough to beat. Gifted with tremendous early pace, she could again have the upper hand before they take the first turn and will hope to have the race very much in safekeeping by the end of the back straight. 

If there is a danger, it could come in the shape of her litter sister, Velvet Diana, who won the other heat of this £500 to-the-winner event. Both are worth noting for the future.
