16:15 Newcastle – Liamarty Dreams – 1pt @ 16/1

Liamarty Dreams could be worth chancing at the prices. He wasn’t far off his best on the turf in September, beaten little more than a couple of lengths at both Chester and Haydock, and then ended up on the unfavoured part of the track around here four days ago.

That came in an apprentice race and now, for the first time in a long time, Clifford Lee is booked. I think that’ll help, as will his draw near the rail, and Master Richard is positioned next door to lead him if they don’t want to take up the running. There are risks with him but he’s a nice price.

17:18 Newcastle – Illusionist – 1pt @ 14/1

Illusionist is threatening to push his followers off the cliff and this will be my third time in a row siding with him. The first was in the Ayr Silver Cup, where a below-par performance was understandable in such a big field, but his last effort over C&D was simply disappointing.

On the other hand, it was a 0-88 and this drop in grade, alongside another 2lb ease in the weights, could help to spark a revival. The rider on board last time wouldn’t have known his quirks, but Oliver Stammers does and hopefully they’re set for a better run against mostly inferior rivals. 

17:50 Newcastle – As If By Chance – 1pt @ 11/1

As If By Chance is talented at this sort of level on a going day and may have better claims than the market is suggesting. His fitness needs to be taken on trust after a couple of months away but Nigel Tinkler’s yard are in flying form and hopefully sharpness won’t be an issue.

He wasn’t operating at his best when last seen, perhaps feeling the effects of a busy campaign, but won handicaps in May and August, the latter impressively off 4lbs lower. He has previous at this track, mainly over further (is better at this distance) and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him go close.
