The department store has added 50 new brands to its offering

From mattresses to televisions, nursery essentials and vacuum cleaners, John Lewis & Partners has long been our go-to destination for all things homeware.

But in recent months the famous department store has also become a one-stop shop for some of the best fashion brands in the industry.

In February, John Lewis announced that it would be adding 50 new fashion and beauty brands to its offering, including start-up independents and high street favourites, to help cater for what it referred to as a “shift in dress codes” as shoppers began opting for more comfortable, casual attire over more formal styles, during the coronavirus pandemic.

To accommodate this shift towards “casualisation”, the department store has modernised its fashion offering with a host of new brands that specialise in specific areas of womenswear.

The first new brands to launch online included high street stalwart Mango, followed by a string of emerging, independent and predominantly online labels like Ro&Zo, Kemi Telford and Nubian Skin.

As fitness equipment at John Lewis saw year-on-year sales increase by 104 per cent in 2020, the retailer also predicted a rise in all-day athleisure and introduced Girlfriend Collective, Ninety Percent and New Balance to its line-up, which already includes Sweaty Betty and Athleta.

Similarly, John Lewis recognised that sustainability and conscious shopping would continue to be at the forefront for many of its customers’ minds and snapped up brands such as Baujken, Thought, and L&T Heirlooms, which offer high-quality fashion that gives back to the community.

If your wardrobe is in need of an upgrade now that socialising is back on the cards, look no further than John Lewis & Partners, where you will find a range of brands that have something to offer every fashion fan. Here, we take a look at some of the best labels to shop at the department store online right now.

Founded by former executives of Warehouse, Albaray offers everything from dresses in colourful prints to jumpsuits, blouses, loungewear and wardrobe basics priced between £22 and £120, all with sustainability in mind.

A quarter of the brand’s collection is made from Ecovero viscose (derived from sustainable wood and pulp), while another quarter is crafted from 100 per cent organic cotton and the rest is made from either Tencel lyocell (a more environmentally friendly type of rayon), linen blends, deadstock fabrics or organic cotton blends. Our top pick is this crisp cotton poplin dress (£89, Johnlewis.com) that features a hand-painted sunflower print.
