Faux fur is an obvious choice for winter: it's cruelty-free, but still cosy and super-chic. It's become so popular in the fashion world that alongside designer offerings – many big labels have ditched real fur altogether– and high street pieces, an array of specialist labels have launched.

We've scoured the lot to bring you our pick of the stoles, wraps, tippets and collars to rock in the colder months.

1. Colour block faux fur stole: £32, topshop.com

Give your winter coats a makeover with this large stole, which hangs roughly down to your thighs. The vibrant burgundy will add some colour on a dreary autumn day, but the white tip balances out the brightness. It will keep you pretty warm, too.

Worn by the likes of Anna Wintour and Natalie Massenet, London-based designer Hannah Weiland has become known for her playful, luxe accessories and outerwear. We like her unusual colour combinations and textures, just like this one in green hues with contrasting sherling stripes. It’s large enough (168cm long and 10cm wide) to make a bit of a statement.

3. Blue faux fur tippet scarf: riverisland.com, £28

If you’re looking for a statement style with a high-street price, this multicoloured tippet from the high street staple will do the job. The colour combo is easier to wear than it looks and the pastel blue makes it bang on-trend for autumn/winter 2015. It’ll also keep your shoulders warm - a bonus.

Here's another cool London-based, faux fur label creating affordable pieces. This one is super bright but toned down with contrasting beige. It’s worn like a snood, but it falls more like a stole. It’s super-soft and comes in black and grey, and blue and navy combinations, too.

5. Toni teal faux fur scarf: £15, prettylittlething.com

As spotted on the Temperley London and Michael Kors autumn/winter 2015 catwalks, teal is a popular colour this season. This scarf from the affordable British online retailer is your best bet if you’re on a budget.

6. Charlotte Simone blue faux fur candy can stole: £185, avenue32.com

From British designer Charlotte Simone, who's on a mission "to reinvent the scarf", this electric blue and black and white-striped number is a conversation-starter. It's long and narrow – 180cm by 10.5cm – so you can wear it as a stole or wrap it around a few times on colder days.

7. Reiss Griffin scarf: £65, zalando.co.uk

Stripes, but not as you know them. Wear this eye-catching number in shades of grey and a bit of colour-popping blue loosely as a stole or crossed. It's 140cm long and 21cm wide and has a hidden fastening to help it stay in place.

8. Faux Fur skinny bold stripe scarf: £30, asos.com

Make the gloomy days better and dare to add some vibrant shades to your all-black outfits with this this multicoloured piece. It’s long and wide - wear it as a stole or wrapped around the neck when you want to be extra cosy.

Charcoal and black make a super-versatile combination for winter. This striped style from the London-based label is a smart investment if you want to do the faux fur thing without going too in-your-face with colour.

Helen Moore is a big name in the faux fur world. Designed and handmade in the UK, her oversized stoles have a celebrity following (Fearne Cotton and Alexa Chung are fans), but she also makes other, smaller pieces like these collars with leather buckles.They come in five colours, our pick is this pretty blue.

Our love affair with leopard print shows no sign of abating and if you don't want to go for a full coat, a stole is the next best thing. From faux fur specialists Ruby + Ed, this one has contrasting tails and, thanks to the handy popper, can be worn as a crossover neckwarmer, too.

Verdict

Bandits’ twist scarf is great value for money - it’s super soft and it looks like a much more expensive piece, plus it comes in three different colour combos. Representing the high street, River Island’s multicoloured tippet makes a bit of a statement. If you want to invest in an up-and-coming designer, try the fun Shrimps' pieces.
