Our Top Picks

Tablescaping is the latest homeware trend to infiltrate our Insta feeds – and where better to start than with our expert round-up of the best table linen?

So what exactly is it? Put simply, tablescaping is nothing more than the art of setting your table. Yep, just like your nana used to do. Turns out that a few candles, placemats, tinted glassware and colour coordinated table linen can make all the difference when it comes to making a big homeware statement.

Whether it came about because we were all stuck at home and trying to #makeamealofit a la interiors expert Laura Jackson, or because we needed something to transform our dining table after using it to work from home day after day, tablescaping is a relatively inexpensive, super chic interiors trend that we can get behind.

When putting our tablecloths to the test we were looking for generous coverage, allowing for a decent drop on our long 4-6 seater table, quality tactile fabrics that we'd happily spend an evening brushing up next too, as well as interesting hems and finishes. Importantly they needed to wash well, retaining their softness and shape once out of the washing machine.

Aside from the aesthetics, covering your table with good quality linen has the added benefit of protecting it from hot pots and plates, not to mention unsightly spillages. And don’t even think of ironing your chosen table linens – the good news is, any creases are all part of the charm.

As much as we can never resist treating ourselves to another (you’ll want a selection to create different themes), a beautifully considered tablecloth also makes a brilliant housewarming gift and will delight whoever is hosting Christmas this year.

So whether you're setting the table for one, dining in a duo or actually hosting guests (IRL or via Zoom, it’s all the same), a bit of clever coordination will take your meal from drab to fab.

You can trust our independent reviews. We may earn commission from some of the retailers, but we never allow this to influence selections, which are formed from real-world testing and expert advice. This revenue helps to fund journalism across The Independent.

Wes gingham frill tablecloth

Wes-Gingham-Frill-Tablecloth.jpg

Don’t have a rectangular table? Fear not, Nordic home textile brand Projektityyny (no, we’re not entirely sure how to pronounce that either) offers chic designs for both long and round tables. Made from textured linen, the Wes gingham in mustard is perfect year-round. Team with bright white plates for a pop of summer sunshine or add tonal candles come autumn. The 20cm frill is just the icing on the proverbial cake. Finish the look with matching embroidered napkins (which also double up as a fabric placemat if you prefer) and for the hostess with the mostess, the coordinating pinny.

Soho Home Rosa linen table runner

soho-home-table-runner.jpg

If a full-size tablecloth feels a bit too much for your space, a chic table runner is a great alternative. Not only does it take up a little less room but this one is also less than half the price of the full-size version – a saving not to be sniffed at. Adding just a touch of colour, you could use alone or layer over the rectangular gingham frill tablecloth above for a beautifully opulent vibe. It’s part of Soho Home’s Rosa collection which includes matching tasselled napkins to complement the tassel trims finishing either end of the runner.

4
Piglet in Bed oatmeal linen tablecloth

piglet-in-bed-tablecloth.jpg

We first fell in love with Piglet’s super soft linen from the comfort of our bed but soon discovered it offers tablecloths and napkins too, in the same 100 per cent natural stonewashed French flax material. The beautifully soft hand-feel is down to the brand pre-washing the material, which also prevents shrinkage as well as it becoming misshapen when you chuck it in the wash. The ultimate neutral backdrop, this oatmeal shade effortlessly pulls together a multitude of colour schemes without trying too hard.

5
Lisa Corti extra large leopard stripes rust tablecloth

lisa-corti-tablecloth.jpg

Based in Milan, Lisa Corti is known for producing textiles in eclectic patterns inspired by Indian, Chinese and Japanese cultures. This cotton tablecloth is extra large, so perfect for big tables seating 4-6 people or smaller tables if you’d prefer a longer drop. From a purely practical point of view, the leopard print spots should hide any splatters of spaghetti but the warm autumnal shades of maroon and mustard, coupled with the dahlia print and striped border are a complete joy to take in.

6
The White Company Seville tablecloth

the-white-company-table-cloth.jpg

If simple and timeless are your style mantras, this Seville tablecloth from The White Company should fit the bill. Made with a blend of linen and cotton, it’s finished with a subtle ladder stitch detail around the hem (just like you’ll find on the brand’s Santorini bed linen), and has the ability to be both dressed up for special occasions or down for more everyday use. Available in two sizes, pair with the matching napkins for a bright white Christmas table.

7
H&M washed linen tablecloth

h&m-table-linen.jpg

Speaking from experience, the first stain on your new table linen cuts the deepest. However, with this affordable set, you’ll be more likely to take those red wine splodges in your stride. Available in pristine white, warm beige and a slightly darker grey, there are two sizes to choose from depending on how many you’re seating. It’s finished with double stitched edges but otherwise is completely plain for you to layer with patterned plates and placemats.

8
Summerill & Bishop le cirque linen tablecloth

Summerill-&-Bishop-tablecloth.jpg

We have to admit that it’s not the cheapest option, but this theatrical tablecloth will instantly become the focus of any special occasion dinner party. We’d recommend a large bowl or candle for the very centre, from which big, bold swirls fan out. It’s also available in yellow and blue, all with matching napkins if you’re looking to go all out. We’d recommend keeping the tableware itself super simple to show off the circus-themed big top design. Look out for the brand’s one-off special collaborations with chefs, designers and fashionistas – they always sell out in record time.

The verdict: Linen table cloths

It’s pretty tough choosing our favourite table linen as we’d be genuinely thrilled to eat our tea on any of these beautiful designs, however, we’ve awarded our best buy to the Wes gingham frill tablecloth from Projektityyny. Not only is it available in both rectangle and circular options, as well as multiple shades, with matching accessories but the additional frill hem makes it feel worth the extra money. For a slightly cheaper, more whimsical option, Yolke’s collaboration with Cressida Jamieson is utterly swoon-worthy.
