It may be little in stature, but this is a furniture piece that holds a lot of responsibility – not to mention our coffee cup, alarm clock, bedside lamp, reading glasses and stack of bedtime books.
With a host of creative designs around, there’s always a nightstand to suit our interiors style and budget.
If you prefer a clean-lined and clutter-free look, plump for a bedside table with integrated storage. We’ve found a number of nightstands featuring generous storage space by way of two or three nifty drawers.
If you’re a bookworm, look for a bedside table with shelving so as to keep your favourite paperbacks both on display and within easy reach.
While some designs can come in pairs, we preferred the versatility of the singular purchase because there’s often only room for one – a pertinent point if you’re a city-dweller with space at a premium.
Otherwise, you can fill your boots and invest in a matching duo of diminutive tables to suit your style, not forgetting that in the bedroom, symmetry is everything.
Our round-up includes some affordable pieces, as well as those on the higher end of the price bracket (don’t forget to double that if you’re buying a pair). We tested to the tables that were both well-crafted and superbly creative in design.

Argos Home softline one drawer bedside table, black
Dimensions: W 41.4cm x H 73.2cm x D 39.6cm
Taller than most, this Scandi-inspired bedside table offers an imposing presence in the bedroom – and that’s even more apparent when purchased in a pair. The look is really striking. It’s made from MDF with a wooden inset handle and solid pine tapered legs, and it’s finished in an attractive, soft black that’s far from austere. Its height allows for plenty of storage space – permission to pile up those paperbacks, while its easy to open drawer kept our nighttime essentials close to hand.
Dunelm rumi bedside table
Dimensions: W 40cm x H 54cm x D 35cm
This two-drawer nightstand is all about understated elegance. It’s crafted from solid mango wood and offers a natural texture in its arresting wood grain. This is offset with simple pull handles and a supporting under-frame in a muted gold colour. Equal in size and capacity, the drawers are generously deep, while the taller back and sides of the unit create a tray-like top that keeps our bits and bobs and coffee cup safely secure. We loved this sturdy bedside table with its modest flashes of glamour.
Mustard Made the shorty in sage
Dimensions: W 35cm x H 72cm x D 46cm
Bringing cool industrial chic to the bedroom is this locker-style cabinet from Mustard Made. The metal unit might be hard-edged by design, but it’s finished in a soft powdery sage, making it a perfectly calming addition as a nightstand. It’s fully lockable and features two adjustable interior shelves, which we found handy for separating the hardbacks and paperbacks. Easy to assemble and available in left or right opening configurations, this one scores high on versatility. It is on the taller side so do bear that in mind when you’re reaching for your morning cuppa.
Oak Furnitureland Romsey natural solid oak bedside table
Dimensions: W 50cm x H 60cm x D 41cm
Marrying traditional craftsmanship with sleek, contemporary design is this double drawer nightstand from Oak Furnitureland. As with all the brand’s wood furniture offerings, the bedside table is beautifully made, boasting dovetail joints and a 100 per cent solid oak makeup – including the back of the unit and its inner drawers – making it reliably sturdy and weighty. We loved this piece for its smooth, curved edges and its recessed handles, none of which interrupts the natural wood grain. The nightstand is generous on storage, too.
Made Ada two drawer bedside table, dark stain oak
Dimensions: W 51cm x H 50cm x D 41cm
Crafted from solid oak with dark stained oak veneers, this double drawer unit takes its design cue from vintage sewing boxes and we loved its charming mid-century aesthetic. Perfectly rounded with the natural wood grain following the lines of the curve, it is one neatly put together piece of furniture. The wrap-around drawers open up to reveal a rectangular interior space, which is slimmer than you might imagine from the front, but nonetheless the nightstand offers more in the way of storage than many. The smart, angled and tapered legs complete the Sixties look.
Willa Arlo Interiors Ryley three drawer bedside table
Dimensions: W 48cm x H 72.5cm x D 35.5cm
This three drawer nightstand is positively dripping in glamour and we loved its vintage aesthetic. It’s made from wood and clad in a good quality mirror glass, which allows the light to bounce off of it beautifully (mirrored furniture pieces are a great choice for smaller bedrooms, giving the illusion of light and space). It’s finished in an antique silver, which awards it a lovely aged look. The ornate shaping of the drawers further adds to the unit’s multifaceted glass reflections. This is a sturdy bedside table with ample storage and soft-gliding lined drawers, making it as practical as it is pretty.
Oliver Bonas kinship rattan green bedside table
Dimensions: W 45cm x H 51x D 45cm
The rattan trend isn’t just for summer. Nor is it just for kitting out the conservatory. In bringing this natural material into the bedroom, you’re awarding it a laid-back bohemian feel that goes very well with promoting relaxation: perfect for sleeping spaces, then. This rounded nightstand isn’t cheap, but it is a beautifully made furniture piece that’s decorative and functional in equal measure. Owing to its shaping, the duo of drawers open up to reveal smaller storage spaces than you might imagine but that’s countered with ample surface space on top. We loved this bedside table for its quirky colour pops against the neutral rattan.
Zara Home wooden bedside table
Dimensions: W 38cm x H 55cm x D 30cm
Another piece that features natural rattan is Zara Home’s mid-century inspired offering. We loved this bedside table for its simple, considered design. The little wooden nightstand is made from a warm, mid-toned ash and boasts a glass top and a lower rattan shelf. Without drawers, its storage space is entirely open – and sometimes that’s all we need. While it is ideal for smaller spaces you’d be wise to steer clear if you’re a bit of a hoarder. It’s too cute to be overwhelmed with clutter. Well-made and sturdy, this one is small but mighty.
La Redoute Ronda vintage style bedside table
Dimensions: W 38.6cm x H 63.5cm x D 31cm
This is a lovely little mid-century inspired nightstand that combines open storage space with a single pull-out drawer, giving us easy access to our books while keeping our smaller stuff safely contained. It’s made from walnut-veneered MDF, which brings both homely warmth and vintage style to the bedroom. We loved the bedside table’s sharp angled shaping at the top, which is reflected in its tapered and angled legs. Boxy but at the same time, elevated off the floor, this one offers a good mix of stylish and sturdy.
The verdict: Bedside tables
We were impressed with Argos Home’s softline one drawer bedside table for its cool Scandinavian look and its striking colour way: the soft black and natural wood makes a heady contrast. At just £65 it’s an affordable furniture piece that doesn’t break the bank if you’re planning to purchase a pair. We also loved Willa Arlo Interiors’s Ryley three drawer bedside table via Wayfair. It’s a well-crafted, storage-heavy nightstand that brought instant glamour and vintage chic to our bedroom.
