Since the pandemic began in March 2020, we’ve been cooped up indoors pretty much ever since, and our attention has turned to our homes.

As we’ve grown sick of looking at the same four walls, decorating, renovating and updating our interiors has become a hobby, with trends such as bouclé, Seventies-inspired items and tablescaping emerging during the past year.

If you’re keen on hunting down unique, handmade finds, then you’ll know Etsy is a treasure trove. The online retailer is home to thousands of small businesses to support, selling everything from face coverings to furniture.

It’s recently unveiled its trend report for 2021, sharing the must-have decor trends inspired by our lockdown shopping habits.

The report says that we’re “experiencing our homes differently and more intimately than we ever have before” and its trends are reflecting this relationship. “The open floor plan has dwindled in favour of the separation of spaces, and home offices are the new normal,” it says.

Should you have a big renovation project in the works, or are looking for small buys to refresh your space, we’re sharing the most sought-after pieces and trends according to Etsy.

You can trust our independent round-ups. We may earn commission from some of the retailers, but we never allow this to influence selections, which are formed from real-world testing and expert advice. This revenue helps to fund journalism across The Independent.

Wavy, squiggly and curvy decor

According to the retailer, fun shapes have proved popular, with an increase in searches for wavy candles up 28,236 per cent, while searches for wavy mirrors saw a 5,296 per cent increase.

In our guide to the taper candles too pretty to light, the Lex Pott twist tapered candles (£25, Earlofeast.com) caught our eye for their unique shape.

A piece of decor in their own right, they don’t even need a candle holder. While we love the striking yellow shade, they’re also available in pink, lavender, yellow, peach, mint, light blue, white or orange, so you have ample choice.

If you prefer a classic candle shape but still want to dip your toes into the trend, then these The Edition 94 swirl candles (£6, Theedition94.com) are the perfect compromise.

Made from an unbleached cotton wick, with glossy, jewel-toned hues from olive green to cappuccino brown, they’re perfect for decorating your dinner table.

If you’re shopping for a new mirror, you can incorporate the trend into your home with a wavy frame.

This Estelle floor mirror (£349, Urbanoutfitters.com) is minimal and on-trend, but won’t clutter your space or date too quickly.

It’s also ideal if you have limited room or are living in rented housing, as you can take it with you if you move without fiddling with hanging fixtures, while it still provides an instant update to any room.

Mushroom motifs

We can’t get enough mushrooms, says Etsy, and not just in our gardens.

Taking inspiration from the Sixties and Seventies, fungi have emerged as a home decor trend, with lamps leading the way with a 371 per cent increase in searches.

While an original Murano lamp, made with hand-blown Venetian glass, can cost as much as £500, there are more affordable dupes to be found.

This mushroom lamp in Murano glass (£137.76, Etsy.com) is handmade in Italy and will add a bold splash of colour to your bedside.

While we’re a fan of the blue shade, with its swirling patterns that remind us of beach waves, it’s also available in pink, white, brown and turquoise.

Or if you want to try out the translucent glass trend that’s proving popular in candlestick holders, this Habitat lyss glass table lamp (£20, Argos.co.uk) will add a contemporary feel to your space.

Emitting a warm, ambient glow, it’ll provide the perfect finishing touch to any room without breaking the bank.

The home sanctuary

As leaving our homes has been hugely restricted and our domestic and work lives have merged into one, we’ve been left desperate for a bit of escapism.

As a result, creating a calm and relaxing sanctuary within our homes has become more important than ever.

One room it can be easy to do this is the bathroom, and, according to Etsy, there has been a 7,466 per cent increase in searches for eucalyptus shower bundles, as we attempt to create a spa-like atmosphere.

Try out the trend yourself with this eucalyptus and lavender shower and bath bunch bundle (from £27.99, Thewellnessbunch.com).

(The Wellness Bunch)

Featuring fresh baby blue eucalyptus and dried lavender, it’s made to order using foliage sourced from Holland.

Hang it up by your shower rail, placed away from running water so it doesn’t end up sopping, and enjoy a small but significant addition to your shower time that will make getting through lockdown a little bit easier.

If you’re shopping on a budget, this fresh shower eucalyptus bundle (£13.14, Etsy.com) is perfect if you’re also short of assembly time.

It comes with a stainless steel stick-on hanger and you can pick from small, medium or large bundles depending on how much room you have.
