Paralysed man walks using ‘thought-controlled’ technology in world-first
A paralysed man can walk again after new technology has restored communication between his brain and spinal cord.
Gert-Jan Oskam, 40, was paralysed in a cycling accident in 2011.
Doctors implanted a “digital bridge,” a device developed by the CEA which reads brain signals and sends instructions to the spine.
Thanks to the technology, Oskam has now regained movement in his legs; he can stand, walk, and climb stairs.
Oskam, from the Netherlands, is now able to enjoy standing up at a bar to share a beer with friends for the first time in 10 years.
