Massive gamma-ray blast recorded one billion light years away from Earth
Scientists have recorded a gamma-ray blast one billion light years away from Earth, in what is the largest explosion caught on camera in the universe. According to the German Electron Synchotron in Hamburg, the flash was the result of a star dying, before it turns into a black hole. “The observations with [the High Energy Stereoscopic System telescope] challenge the established idea of how gamma rays are produced in these colossal stellar explosions which are the birth cries of black holes,” the team behind the discovery said.
