First clips of new Arabian leopard cub in Saudi Arabia

On 23 April, 2021, a rare Arabian leopard cub was born in a captive-breeding programme in Taif, Saudi Arabia.

The birth of the female cub was an important milestone for this critically endangered species; centuries of habitat loss and poaching have reduced its population to fewer than 200 in the wild.

The as-yet unnamed cub was born in a centre managed by the Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU), a group currently working to restore the Arabian leopards’ natural habitat in north-west Saudi Arabia.

The Independent is a media partner of AlUla and the Saudi Green Initiative.
