Former conman who ‘stole £30 million’ shares advice on how to avoid scammers

A former conman dubbed “Britain’s greatest fraudster” has shared his advice on how to avoid internet and telephone scams.

Tony Sales, 46, who claims he stole £30 million during a 30-year spree, appeared on Good Morning Britain on Wednesday 25 October.

He was asked about “classic little signs” that should ring warning bells.

“You have triggers - like trust. ‘It’s okay, I’m a really trustworthy person’. If someone is telling you that on the phone, they are automatically making you feel at ease,” Mr Sales said.

His advice would be to “step back from that situation” and “put the phone down”.

Mr Sales added that only using “reputable” websites and companies to pay for items is a good way to avoid being scammed, as well as doing research on an individual you may be buying from.

“Have they got a following? Are there reviews? Don’t just take their word for it.”
