Climate protesters smear paint on 123-year-old Monet artwork

Climate protesters threw red paint on a 123-year-old artwork by Claude Monet and then glued themselves to the frame at Sweden’s National Museum on Wednesday, 14 June. Footage released by Aterstall Vatmarker shows activists gluing themselves to the painting “The Artist’s Garden at Giverny,” which is on display as part of an exhibition at the museum.

Two women were detained in Stockholm following the protest.

Spokesperson Hanna Tottmar said the artwork was encased in glass and “is now being examined by the museum’s conservators to see if any damage has occurred.”

The exhibition is expected to reopen to visitors on Thursday, 15 June.
