MPs hold minute’s silence to remember Betty Boothroyd after Lindsay Hoyle pays moving tribute

A minute’s silence was held in the House of Commons on Monday (27 February), following the death of Baroness Betty Boothroyd.

Described by Sir Lindsay Hoyle as an “inspiring woman” and “ground-breaking” politician, Baroness Boothroyd was the first woman to be speaker of the Commons - from 1992 to 2000.

“Not only was Betty Boothroyd an inspiring woman, but she was also an inspirational politician, and someone I was proud to call my friend,” Sir Lindsay said, before the House observed a moment of silence in her memory.
